Light on Yoga: Cracking the Code
Light on Yoga, often touted as a definitive resource for yoga teachers and practitioners is even sometimes hailed as The Bible of Modern Hatha Yoga, and yet this gem of a book is often hard to penetrate, difficult to understand and even more challenging to apply our own practice and to the students we see right in front of us in our classes.
Cracking the Code is a course for practitioners and teachers who want to learn how to use Light on Yoga as a manual for practice and teaching. The primary premise of the course is that there is a wealth of information in Light on Yoga that is not always evident at first (or even fifth or fiftieth) glance. As time has passed and as yoga asana has evolved, we see that many of the poses are interpreted differently than how they are given in Light on Yoga. Certainly Mr. Iyengar's own work evolved since Light on Yoga was published and tremendous commentary- both written and oral- has been added to the conversation of these poses and the practice of yoga.
That being said, by looking back at what Mr. Iyengar offered in this treatise, we can deepen our understanding of both the past and the present and can help us make informed, intelligent choices in our own approach to asana practice and teaching.
Each week we will look at some aspect of the book and I will offer a practice based in some way on the content in the book. Here is a general overview of the course which is designed to be a guided discussion more than a definitive or limited viewpoint.
